Independent Readers

We have been working hard to become independent readers. Each student has a book box that we use during reading time. The book box contains books on each child's reading level, along with familiar poems, songs, and snap word books the students already know.

During independent reading time, we have been growing our reading behaviors to help build stamina and focus for reading. Each child chose a reading behavior and set a WIG (Wildly Important Goal) to help him/her become a better reader. Some of the reading behaviors we are working on include:

  • Make a stack of books and read through the stack
  • Have a book in my hands the whole reading time
  • REALLY pay attention to my books
  • Stay in my reading space the whole reading time
  • Read quietly with a level 0 or level 1 voice

Make sure to ask your child about the WIG he/she set for independent reading time.
