Observation Walk

We started a new unit of study in science about the five senses. We have learned all about our eyes and the sense of sight.

To practice using our sense of sight, we went on an observation walk. We went outside and used magnifying glasses and our special "looking glasses" to remind us about focusing on our sense of sight. We recorded our observations we made in our science journals.

We definitely have some budding scientists in our class!

PJ Day!

We were so excited about PJ Day today! Our class has marble jars...one jar labeled, "Fill Me Up!" and one labeled, "Take Me Out." Whenever our class is working together to show Panther Pride, we get to move a marble from the Take Me Out jar into the Fill Me Up jar.

We earned PJ Day today because we filled up our Fill Me Up jar for the first time! The kids were so excited to wear their jammies to school today and are already talking about all the wonderful things they can do to get our marbles moved again for our next PJ Day. 😊

We are all READERS! 😊

This week, we found out some very exciting news...everyone in our class can read! 😊 That's because we can all read books by reading the pictures, or taking a "picture walk."

We practiced reading the pictures by using some wordless picture books, like this one below, Pancakes for Breakfast, by Tomie dePaola. On each page, we practiced looking for details in the picture and telling the story that's happening aloud. This is reading! Taking a picture walk, or reading the pictures, is the first thing we teach children to do as they begin reading. This important step helps children gain a sense of story and eventually makes decoding words an easier feat. This is because they are using the meaning of the story to read.

Make sure to have your child read the pictures of their books at home to you. They are excellent picture walkers, as you can tell in the photos below.

Math Games

Math games are a great way to teach and help kids practice new concepts we learn in math. Today we learned about the concept of "greater than." We used the game, One More, to help the children practice identifying one greater than, or more than, the number they rolled on a die. They loved playing the game!

Meet Ms. Fincher

This week our class got to meet Ms. Fincher! She will be our long term substitute teacher while I am out on maternity leave. The kids already love her, and she has had two days to get to know our class, routines, and curriculum. We are so lucky to have Ms. Fincher!

We Are All Alike...We Are All Different

September 1, 2016

We read the book, We Are All Alike...We Are All Different, this week. We talked about all the ways we are the same and different. The kids had wonderful ideas.

  • We are all alike - We all love kindergarten!
  • We are all alike - We all have senses.
  • We are all alike - We all like to eat.
  • We are all alike - We all have bodies.
  • We are all different - We like to do different things.
  • We are all different - Not everyone likes pepperoni on their pizza...some like cheese only, sausage, or vegetables! :)
  • We are all different - All of our homes are different.
  • We are all different - We all look different.

We talked about how everyone has different skin colors and shades. We put all of our arms together and someone said, "It looks like a rainbow of skin color!"
